Buddhism, being a non-theistic tradition originated by a man, does not know the concept of prophecy as the voice of God or derived from God’s inspiration, but has an extensive repertoire of prophecies made by Buddha and his successors, as well as divination practices ad- opted from the folk substrate. Although Buddhism advocates mindfulness and focusing on the present moment, and according to the canonical writings, the Buddha himself was against any practices of predicting future, yet he spoke about future events. The Author explores this theme in relation to the historical Buddha, attempting to indicate the main types of such utterances, and presents the results of her research into this phenomenon in later traditions, using the biographical materials of one of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism as an example.
